SkyWhite – Zona Quente EP (Afrocentric Records)

SkyWhite is a brand new talent from Mozambique, who at the tender age of 20 has been snapped up by Afrocentric Records for his powerful debut release ‘Zona Quente EP’. Kicking off this potent 4 tracker, ‘Zona Quente’ (meaning ‘Hot Zone’) bounces with afro rhythms and melodically hypnotic arpeggios; ‘Boogie Dance’ is a sublime slice of afrotech where tension filled menacing synths and woody rhythms combine to create a moody atmosphere; ‘Elimination+’ is a fusion of electronica and earthy tones loaded with energetic beats that chug under melancholy piano stabs and buzzing synths; and ‘Bakossi Tribe’ sees SkyWhite get creative with label mate Nero Adore, who produced The Persistence of Unbutu EP, also on Afrocentric Records. Together they’ve created a cinematic monster armed with power beats and brooding synthology with progressive undertones.

A brand new talent to the music scene, SkyWhite’s journey into music began when he learned to play the piano at 10 years old. He was turned on to house music at just 16 after attending Black Coffee’s (Ballantine’s Human Orchestra) performance in 2014 and promptly learned to DJ. He honed his craft playing at local parties and events, before producing a selection of his own tracks that were promptly signed by one of the hottest Afro House labels of the moment, Afrocentric.

Yulia Niko – Acid Meow EP (Get Physical Music)

Get Physical continue with a busy November, this time with a superb EP from Russian born, Germany based Yulia Niko featuring a remix from Derek Marin.

Niko was intoxicated with dance music from a young age and soon got her first residency in Sochi. She has since spent time in New York before settling in Berlin and has now set up her own vinyl only TochnoTechno label. She has also released on Crosstown Rebels, Baile Musik, Nervous Records, Plant74, played parties in LA, live on Mixmag who named her as one to watch in 2017 and has also toured South America this year.

Superb opener and title cut ‘Acid Meow’ is a slick, stylish deep house track with warm dub chords. A molten, meandering acid line runs through it and the prickly percussion adds another layer that helps sink you into a state of hypnosis. It’s one to work the floor into a tasteful lather, with subtle vocals finishing it off in charming fashion.
Derek Marin is a drummer turned techno producer known for his productions on labels like Plastic City, Superfreq and Nervous Records. He uses his skills to flip ‘Acid Meow’ into a serene track with thoughtful, far sighted pads and the original’s acid line encouraging you to get lost in the music. It’s an atmospheric and absorbing groove, no doubt.
Finally, ‘Wake Up’ gets busy with bubbly drums and synths all making you want to move. Swirling pads add depth to the track and freaky bits of alien sound design make it all the more cinematic.

This is a wonderfully effective EP that shows off Yulia Niko’s ever evolving skills.

Lawrence Dix – Stranger Things EP (Oh So Coy Records)

We House Sundays’ Lawrence Dix makes his OSC debut with this classy 2 tracker.
“Stranger” goes deep and dubby with tripped out chords and a soulful vocal refrain.

Duet – Love You Tonight (Candy Flip Records)

Launched in 2018 the DUET project was conceived by producers Isaac William and Manoel Neto, both residents of the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.
From the influence of great talents of electronic music like: Kyle Watson, Frank Rizardo, Nora En Pure, CamelPhat, Claptone, Fisher, Format B, Mark Knight, ILLUSIONIZE, Gabe and Mix Mag artists, Defectd Records, DirtyBird, This Is not Bristol among other record labels, the duo decided to unify the knowledge from the passion for music and externalize in their creations a musical identity of their own, inspired in large part by the elements of Deeptech, Tech house, Techno and Psy Trance.
One of the great features of the project is not to obey rules regarding the creation of their music, this freer concept allows each production to have a unique sound, navigating through grooves and ambiences that mix melodic sounds, vocals inspired by House Music and Deep House and Bas lines with the remarkable characteristics of Psy Trance and Tech House, thus forming a concept of creation that aims to bring a new sound perspective, eclectic and peculiar.
The song “Love You Tonight”, released in October 2018 by CandFlip Records, melodic vocal music, repetitive elements and Bas Line dancing, was the first release of the project. Created with the prospect of being a simple and original sound the music represents exactly the characteristics of the duo recifense.
With all these concepts and inspirations, the DUET project aims to expand to Brazil new perceptions and musical genres, bringing the public closer to this vast universe of great artists and major labels through their productions and presentations.
