Max Cohle – Cabaret EP (Microdrive Records)

Max Cohle is back on Microdrive with a new fresh EP. Three new original tracks dedicate to sweet funky groove and massive rolling bass line. Great percussion and drums surrounded by deep chords and sweet analog melodies. The perfect set for some high pumping dance-floor experience.

Stones & Bones – Love Lockdown Remixes (Oh So Coy Recordings)

We were very excited when we heard this amazing Kanye cover by local duo Stones & Bones back in 2013. Of course we picked it up immediately and this actually forged one of their first releases.
Fast-forward to now and the Pretoria pairing have amounted a bucket-load of quality releases including a spot on the MoBlack roster.
It seemed only fitting that we take a trip down memory lane and get some fresh versions of this killer track by the boys themselves as well as a stunning soulful rework by Ross Couch.

Dip – Kaleidoscope EP (Lucidflow Records)

The latest release from Lucidflow sees Dip turn out a three tracker heavily slanted towards deep soundtracky atmosphere, with an acute eye for sonic placement on the aural stage. Dip straight in at the title track and you’ll discover why. ‘Kaleidoscope’ has a few tricks up its sleeves that beguile – the low end timbre spreads out wide creating a imposing horizon, an arpeggio hook rolls in like milky grey clouds, and a string swell rises as if the sun is just about managing to pierce through before being obscured again.

Following this is a piece of driving dub-funk in the shape of ‘Moloko’. It taps into the same sort of vibe that was rife around the turn of the millennium, where deep house and progressive found themselves unexpected bedfellows, combining well produced thoughtful fare with a dark dance floor edge.

Going further down this rabbit hole, ‘Little Man’ is the perfect soundtrack for the Springtime months, where every sunny morning carries the risk of a sharp flurry of afternoon snow. Feel free to warm up to the inviting bass line, but not too much, there is ice at the core of ‘Little Man’ keeping things sharp.

Upstart – Chicken Shops EP (Ruffset Records)

Release Date – 10/02/2020

“This 4 track EP is a hot n crispy taster to the Ruffset label. Ruffset owners Al and Ell wanted to create a label that puts fun, cheekiness and charisma into its releases whilst keeping a heavyweight line-up of underground artists. We have come from a background of underground dance music and want to keep a vibe we know with our releases – Reflections of the Past. Sounds of the future.”

This is a write up we worked on with a website call earful of wax that covers the UKG scene:

“Next up on the premiere series is a record from the newly founded Ruffset Records who launch with their debut EP ‘Chicken Shops’. The first release see’s label co-owner Al ‘Upstart’ Smith showcase two original tracks, both with remixes from the super talented Peaky Beats and his deeper house-influenced alias, MYR.

Born from a love of all things old school and a common passion for discovering and dancing to new sounds, Al, together with co-founder Elliott Owen have coined together their ethos of ‘Reflections of the past. Sounds of the future’.

Both parties have been involved in the scene as DJs for some time, whilst Elliott also brings with him a core affiliation with the reputable party and label Music Related; who broke their Fabric duck just recently. Despite Ruffset being Al’s first label project, he’s had tunes signed to Needwant and will be well involved in the recruitment of new produce as the label develops.

“We want to explore the wide range of sounds and vibes that resonate with us and our rave heritage. Built with the vinyl resurgence and independent labels in mind, we want to give back to the scene by delivering the fun reflective of ‘back in the day’, without trying to make it the same as it was. Expect to see more UKG but also Jungle, Breaks and Hardcore as well as House & Techno. We expect to put out 2-4 releases per year, so nothing too hectic but only if the music is right!”

Upstart

Al aka Upstart is a co owner of the Ruffset label and also produces under the dj name he gave himself in the late nineties.
Djing and raving from 98 until now Al has a love for Old Skool breakbeat Hardcore, Jungle, Drum n bass, Techno, House and Trance and wants to hear elements of these genres in all the music he makes.
Upstart has been released on Future Disco and Needwant as well as releasing his own stuff independently. He has had recognition from dj’s including the legendary Lee Burridge. His track the first flowers of spring made it onto Needwant’s best of 10 years album to celebrate a decade of the label.
Al is focusing on the Ruffset label and releasing harder sounds more connected with his roots in 2020.

Peaky Beats

Based in Leeds UK, Peaky Beats is an independent Artist & label focused on UKG & Break Beats.
After a busy 2019 releasing PBR001, featuring on Equal People Record’s EPR002, Radio 1 & Rinse FM air time, and various live hardware sets under his belt. Peaky Beats has started 2020 of with a bang releasing PBR002 and debuting his live set at London’s infamous 93 Feet East.
More releases coming this year on Ruffset’s Chicken Shops EP, his own EP ‘Next Level’ with Fraise Records, VA release with 3 Feet Deep, and many more.

Artist Quote:

“Some heavyweight hitters on this one for the 4×4 house heads and rudeboy steppers. Chuffed with this one and me and Peaky hope that people really feel it.
We have a hands in the air rising old skool vibe of track with Urban Fox to start it off moving into a face melting bassline on the steppers garage remix by Peaky. On the B side we have a moody and raw garage vibe starting things off, followed by a final helping of MYR UK 4×4 dub bizness.”

Dj Musique – Lekh Lekha EP (Sunclock Records)

Traxsource Release: 9th April 2020
Worldwide Release: 23rd April 2020

New entry from South Africa Dj Musique with a fantastic Ep of 4 devastating tracks… all with an afro house flavour, each one very particular. Title: Lekh Lekha Ep. The introductory track, homonymous of the ep, has a Venessa Jackson featuring… who has a fantastic voice, and her singing blends perfectly with the musical structure built on it.
‘That Flute’ has a suggestive atmosphere enriched by a very special flute melody that runs hypnotically throughout the track, with an interesting central break.
‘Trough The Scope’ has a strong presence of percussions linked to bass drumming similar to punches on the stomach. Very clubby atmosphere, well structured electronic synths.
‘Unspoken Words’ has a much more classic afro house tribal style, close to the 90’s style. Unceasingly rhythmic, very evocative African choirs. The electronic synths that emerge from the second minute onwards will continue in a constant delirious crescendo!

Husky feat Shyam P – Treat Me Right (Vicious Records)

One of Australia’s most exciting house producers, fusing elements of soul, disco and underground house, Husky makes his return to Vicious for his first release of 2020 with “Treat Me Right”. Enlisting the talents of Dubai based Vocalist Shyam P, who’s list of accolades include Beatport #1 hits plus support from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Riva Starr and more.

‘Treat me right’ straddles a line between a polished throwback vibe that infuses elements of the new school. It’s versatile and energetic, but laidback all at the same time!

And if that wasn’t enough, fresh of a string of top releases on Traxsource, Parisian royalty ART OF TONES takes the track on a funk driven journey worthy of a Soul Train conga line.
