Big Pond – Shout Out & This Thing I Do (Jason Merle Remixes) (Purespace Recordings)
DJ Freestyle is in Australia, Joe Silva is in Canada, and the project they’ve been building across that stretch of ocean is called Big Pond. Their new six-track digital single, Shout Out / This Thing I Do (Jason Merle Remixes), released on Silva’s own Purespace Recordings, revisits two Big Pond tracks from 2011 with fresh remixes by Fresno-based producer Jason Merle—a connection that grew from DJ Freestyle’s mastering work on earlier Merle records.
“Shout Out (Jason Merle Remix)” opens on rolling bass and crunchy percussion, building round synth pads and vocal “ahh” hits into an insistent four-on-the-floor grid, with breakdowns that pull the room in before the kick returns. “This Thing I Do (Jason Merle Remix)” runs chunkier, a bouncing bass line carrying filtered synth chords with an ’80s tint and syncopated vocal hits cutting across the beat. Instrumental and bonus beat versions of both tracks round out the package.
Jason Merle came up through the San Francisco house scene in the late ’90s, stepped away for a decade to focus on family, and has been producing steadily on labels including Viva Recordings, Pluralistic Records, and Whiskey Pickle. DJ Freestyle built a substantial underground house catalog in Queensland, and in 2005, Mark Farina cited him as one of his three favorite producers in BPM magazine. Joe Silva has been releasing records for three decades, with catalog on Viva!, Guesthouse, and Moulton Music, alongside film scores and live sets at Mutek.

Fatback Band – Spanish Hustle (Spring Revisited)
Format: Digital
Joe Claussell returns to the Spring Revisited project, and he delivers another jazz-infused house music remix of a classic funk track by the iconic Fatback Band.
Spring Revisited has been inviting influential house music producers to reinterpret classic tracks from New York’s Spring Records. At its peak in the ’70s, Spring Records released seminal disco, soul, and funk tracks by people ranging from Millie Jackson to Isaac Hayes.
Growing up in New York, Joe Claussell felt the influence of Spring Records, as growing up, his family members often played the label’s releases, and those tracks helped spark his passion for music. Today, Joe Claussell is himself an influential artist, who since starting his career in the ’80s, has helped shape today’s house music scene.
Talking about the original track, Joe Claussell said: “I can vividly recall the very first time I heard Spanish Hustle blasting through my brother Jackie’s stereo system. Not long afterward, I experienced its energy again on the dance floor at a discotheque known as The Inferno, where it was masterfully delivered by the legendary René Hewitt. The record left an imprint on my spirit that never faded.”
Joe Claussell has played headline DJ shows all over the world, including world renowned events ranging from Italy’s Kappa FuturFestival to the Amsterdam’s Dekmantel Festival. He has also produced music for prestigious record labels such as Toy Tonics, Rebirth, and Crosstown Rebels, alongside many releases on his own imprint, Spiritual Life.
This release includes two remix versions by Joe Claussell of Fatback Band’s “Spanish Hustle,” which combines classic funk elements with Latino percussion and samba style trumpets.
First up is the ‘JC Sacred Rhythm Version’ which lifts the tempo and loops a section of the original’s percussion. Keeping the original’s trumpets, and soulful vocal phrases, he adds a DJ friendly kick drum, and shows off his improvisation skills with a vibrant synth line.
Next up, he strips back some of the drums and horns, and focuses on the bassline with the ‘JC Spanish Harlem Dub,’ which is a moody rework utilising some funk-infused organ chords.
