Glenn Underground

Circa 1984, GU aka CVO started out as a DJ under the tutelage of his uncle David Collins in Chicago’s Englewood neighbourhood. He started collecting large amounts of vinyl in the mid 1980’s, from raw Disco to what is now called Rare Grooves & various styles of Chicago House Music.
He is the founding member of the Strictly Jaz Unit and has become one of the most prolific House Music creators of his generation. Glenn was raised on Disco Classics Freeform Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Jazz Funk and Black soul music on Chicago’s South & West Sides (the place where House Music was born). Glenn’s inspiration derives from Chicago’s original pioneers Larry Heard, Ron Hardy, Lil’ Louis & the late Frankie Knuckles. Glenn has produced music for some of the most respected Deep House Music labels of the past three decades. His releases for Cajual, Prescription, Guidance, KENLOU Records, Vega Records, Shelter Records, Wave Records, Peacefrog and the output of his own SJU label, which he runs with his close brother Boo Williams, have set the standard for sophisticated dance music.
He is one of the few DJ’s who can walk the line between Deep Jazz House, Disco influenced House, and the kind of Classics featured at the legendary parties of late seventies Chicago and continues to this day performing the world over.

HAFT – Elephant’s Hill EP (ReadyMix Records)

Release Date:
June 3rd 2019 (Beatport Exclusive)
June 17th 2019 (Worldwide)

For release number 204 on Ready Mix Records, we present HAFT’s latest ‘Elaphant’s Hill EP’ with two original tracks, plus remixes from 7even (GR), Voluntier, Hrag Mikkel & Pambouk and KodKod.
Comprising producers Sam Naseh and Amir Subb, HAFT have been gaining fans all over the globe since their debut in 2017 thanks to a unique fusion of Eastern flavors and atmospheric techno soundscapes.
Opening track ‘Elephant’s Hill’ nicely encapsulates the HAFT sound, with slow moving, blunted grooves, scintillating Oriental string melodies and pristine production throughout.
First remix comes courtesy of Voluntier, aka Londoner Michael Singleton who chooses a slightly more urgent tempo for his version, taking ‘Elephant’s Hill’ into spiritual deep house territory, with busy percussion and evocative original melodies.
For the second remix, Athens beatmaker 7even (GR) keeps the tempo languid and dubs out ‘Elephant’s Hill’ to within an inch of its life, taking it into the echo chamber and out the other side!
Second original track ‘The Shahoor’s Palace’ throws down another laid-back groove, showing a trippier, more stripped down side of HAFT.
For the track’s first remix, Lebanese producer Hrag Mikkel joins forces with fellow countryman, the Grammy nominated Pambouk to turn in a delightfully hypnotic slice of melodic deep house, equally at home on the terrace or in the club.
Finally, Turkish producer Kod.Kod conjures up a deep-thinking, mystical reworking of ‘The Shahoor’s Palace’, providing a moment of shimmering beauty.

Daniel Dubb – Grand Illusions LP (Get Physical Music)

Get Physical’s fantastic 2019 reaches new heights with a full length artist album from Daniel Dubb.
The keen eared out there will have already heard a lead single from the album, ‘Grand Illusions’, which was released back in January and gave a great taster of what to expect from this emotive and sensuous house record.
The artist is someone who crafts meticulous grooves that have come on mainstays like Rejected, Saved, 8Bit and Viva. He runs his own DV8 label and has topped Beatport charts with his tracks before now. This time out he shows off his broad array of skills on a journeying and brilliantly complete house album.
Things kick off with ‘Moments In Time’ Feat. Kyla Millette, a jazzy and lounging track of live sounding drums and exquisitely soulful vocals. After the glowing keys of the title track, ‘Oceans Apart’ Feat. m.O.N.R.O.E. & Hennessy is a more driven house cut with crisp hits, but further spine tingling vocals.
An absorbing interlude shows off Dubb’s knack for dusty and romantic ambiance and tracks like the excellent ‘Lost’ stay cosy and cuddly and the gorgeous ‘Peppy’s Lullaby’ is a beatless spring awakening. The final section includes the subtle depths and heart aching vocals of ‘Without Luv’ and more piano led melancholic ambiance with ‘December 11th,’ then a fantastic Dubb remix sinks you into an elongated groove that features more trademark emotive vocals and pensive pianos.
Grand Illusions is a fantastic journey through the rich sounds and classy styles of house purist Daniel Dubb.

Beneath Usual – Slim EP (Microdrive Records)

Three new fresh and original tracks by Beneath Usual the label manager of Microdrive.
A great Deep, fat and dance floors package to not miss before the summer.

Spettro – Lunch With Kerri EP (Lucidflow Records)

Spettro – Edward Scott, a native of Texas who is based in Mexico – brings a new flavour to Lucidflow on release #171. Techno has been drifting in fresh directions in recent years, with faster tempos and broken beats becoming more and more prevalent as the Microsoft Paperclip approach to rocking dance floors fatigues in equal measure.
You may have already caught a preview of the lead track ‘Lunch With Kerri’ if you jumped in on the recent tenth anniversary of Lucidflow vinyl. If not, this is your second bite of the cherry. Within seconds of listening, it is quite evident this is a departure from the usual Lucidflow sound, despite having the hallmark resonant dub vibe running through the tracks.
In ‘Lunch With Kerri’, the sound ping pongs off the walls, while ‘Huziteco’ features it as permanent undercurrent, and – with an excellent curveball – ‘Calle Consuelo’ goes for the purist approach to dub, rather following the template laid out by Basic Channel all those years ago. What sets this release apart is the abandonment of the four on the floor kick in favour of more indulgent territories. Flecks of jazz, fast tumbling beats, half-time body swerves – there is plenty here to wash over your taste buds. Be adventurous.
‘Lunch With Kerri’ releases on 24.6.2019 from the usual stockists. Don’t forget, the title track is available on the Tenth Anniversary celebratory vinyl.

Karol XVII & MB Valence – Sonus (Get Physical Music)

Polish pair and Loco Records founders Karol XVII & MB Valence get remixed on Get Physical by Jackspeare, Berlin legend Ian Pooley and Lusine.
Up first is Jackspeare, who uses raw instruments next to his electronic sounds to craft music that can be cathartic, relaxing and healing. He has remixed this pair on the label already this year and this time out he takes us deep into a beautiful world of tender chords and gentle keys that are left to linger above soft rolling drums. It is truly marvellous stuff.
Next is cult ambient, IDM and minimal man Lusine who has a decade’s worth of work behind him on labels like Ghostly International. His gorgeous version has celestial ambiance floating up above the succulent and supple drums. It is music to dream to and get lost in wherever you may be when you hear it.
Last of all is Ian Pooley, a veteran of the scene who continues to turn out essential and timeless house tracks that rock Berlin’s finest clubs and beyond. His 11 minute epic is all about giving yourself over to the delicacy of the chords, warmth of the bass and spine tingling grooves that take you to truly emotional places.
These three tracks all bring a memorable sense of musicality to the dance floor.

Toni Young – Nice Touch (Seta Label)

After his successful debut EP last year, Toni Young returns with another bomber this summer. As the title implies, this package is about subtle and intelligent deep house music, which “touches our souls nicely”. All three tracks are very well composed – all the melodies, chords and basslines work perfectly together creating a story, which is built up from the beginning till the end. Again a solid warm-up stuff for demanding ears!

Dandara – Gager EP (Acker Records)

Instead of just peppering his music with samples, Dandara translates the rhythmic vibes of Latin America directly into his synthetic groove. Pororoca sends a feeling of Cumbia to your dancing feet through the backdoor of your unconscious mind – whereas the expressive voice of the singer and the laid-back bass have quite an obvious effect. Quiero is build around the same formula, but clearly aims at the prime time of a party. The same goes for the housey warmth of the Mollono.Bass remix. Pophop sounds very musical this time, almost song-like, making his remix a great match for both big and small sound systems. The escalating ecstasy that is unmistakably the work of Herrhausen & Treindl turns Pororoca into a piece of trancey playfulness. Timoletti with his tropical drums, his fractalized echoes, and his uplifting vibe of the open airs.

After his two last and successful EPs part of the Transitions Series Dubman F. is back to 12+1 London with another 2 original tracks made alongside the Turkish Mehmet Özbek. A stellar deep tech work called ‘Domme’ and a full of feelings song, ‘Goodbye’

Paul Johnson UK & James Winter feat Vea – Reminds Me EP (Valiant Records)

Paul Johnson UK and James Winter swung in for a yarn a few months back and dropped this EP on our desk and we absolutely loved it. Not to mention the World Heavyweight Champion of Chicago House ‘Paul Johnson’ has done a remix to wrap it up with a neat little bow.

Buben – Halftime Show EP (Compulsive Movement Records)

Experienced DJ and producer Buben has his debut release on Compulsive Movement Records. He has provided a funky and soulful track with jazzy influences. Halftime Show is a catchy track that will drag you in further and further the longer you listen to it. Ideal for the beginning of a DJ Set or during sunset at a beach.

DJ Sedatophobia created a remix that took the tempo and energy up a notch, while mainly making use of the catchy and driving bass-line of the original track. This version would suit a moment further in a DJ set when the crowd is already taken along by the music. Vova Gridin made a remix in his own special way and he created a dreamy and hypnotizing version of the original. Ideal for the start of a set or a closing tune at an event at the beach.
